A Daughter of the Earth

Growing up, I would kick off my shoes at the first opportunity.

In my early years I lived in the country, on a farm.
My feet beckoned me outside every chance they had. Discarded shoes were left behind.

Bare feet climbed the Mulberry tree in the backyard
where I would retreat, getting lost in the branches with imaginary escapades.

Walking barefoot on the road to our family farm,
I'd kick up dust in the warm, soft dirt beneath my toes.

Today, my first impulse at day's end is to kick off my shoes.
When I am at home, when I am outside on our land, all thoughts of shoes
are out the window of my mind. My toes just want to grip me some earth.

And there is a name for this. This, is Earthing.
Walking barefoot outside, with the soles of your feet free to mesh with the surface of the Earth.
Throughout history, humans have walked, sat, and slept on the ground. The skin of their bodies touching the skin of the earth.

Today we wear insulating rubber or plastic-soled shoes, rather than the traditional leather-soled footwear. We no longer sleep on the ground as we did in times past.
We live in houses with carpet or tile floors. We are insulated and disconnected from the earth's energy.

When's the last time you kicked off your shoes and reveled in the feeling of the Earth under your feet? Has it been awhile?
It may sound hard to believe, but engaging in this simple pleasure could give your health a much-needed boost. Earthing is a return to the healing power of Nature. It is connecting your body to the earth's eternal surface energy.

Daughter of the Earth

The world seems so busy.
I find it hard to give myself a piece of time.
My feet touch the ground and I feel my soul connect to the earth.

Today, I make a choice.
I will let Nature wrap her warmth around me
like the safety of the womb, listening to my heartbeat.
Today I will allow the earth to recharge my being through my bare feet.

Today I welcome the earth beneath me.
I will sit, as a daughter of the earth
and reground my soul.

Now go leave your shoes in your closet
and get yourself a bit of this healing earth.
